The new mobile provider EE will launch the UK's first mobile 4G network in major cities across the country. London, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol will receive the connection within weeks, with the 12 other major cities following by the end of the year. According to EE this will cover a third of the UK population.
The company's ambition is that 4G connectivity will reach 98% of the population by the end of 2014, but this is dependent on it winning a sufficient part of the 900MHz spectrum available in an forthcoming auction.
The auction will take place in the next few months and other mobile phone networks will bid on parts of the spectrum in order to deliver 4G coverage.
