Before that there was the reel to reel domestic video unit that started in the mid 60s using half inch video tape.
The only drawback was they were not cheap,so only the well off and famous could afford one.At a pinch you could rent one for a certain period again that wasn't cheap either.
The tape for these units was also expensive so half an hours recording could cost you a lot well above the average wage of the time.
There must be some of these units tucked away in peoples houses that will probably only come to light when people pass away and the house is cleared out.
