Digital TV interference.
In the days of analogue even the worst cases of interference was something you could live with, for a few seconds you might have a dance of noise across the screen,or diagonal lines weaving into your picture.
This interference could come from many sources in your home, say a faulty electrical appliance,a favourite here was a loose wire in a plug that would arc and cause the problem. Remember plugs are subject to being thrown around and inevitably the screws in the plug itself work loose, causing an arc but easily fixed by a quick tighten with a screwdriver.
Faulty light bulbs, could be another source of interference.
The fluorescent lower power consumption versions have mostly replaced these, but they can still cause some irritating, hard to track down interference problems.
Remember though these causes of interference haven’t gone away and with digital TV signals the effects are even worse and you can't simply put up with them.
The effects of interference on a digital picture, are to say the least very annoying and make watching a programme very irritating,or even impossible
The picture will freeze accompanied by a very distinct crack on the sound, pixelate then lock up involving unplugging the telly or freeview box to correct it,and this will always happen right in the middle of your favorite film
What steps can be taken to either stop it all together,or reduce it to a point where it is acceptable.
First of all does the problem occur at a particular time of day? keep a record in a note book.
If it does occur regularly at the same time of day then ask the neighbors what they happened to be doing, drilling holes in walls, electric drills or a massive source of digital signal interference.
Or do the problems occur at say rush hour when a build up of cars on the road next to you starts producing interference.
How do we go about reducing the effects of interference?
The first culprit can be poor quality co axial cable that connects your TV set to the Aerial.
If it is cheap and nasty, interference will pour into your system unhindered, all co ax used for digital signals must have a minimum quality rating that your typical wickes branch wont have.
Another very common problem is your TV being tuned to the wrong transmitter, for certain channels, this is easy to check but does need knowledge of multiplexes and channel nos from certain transmitters.
It easy to come to the conclusion your Aerial is at fault, but the solution could be a simple retune.

Second the Aerial itself.
The classic yagi pattern Aerial is not good at rejecting interference, the aerial of choice now is the LOG PERIODIC an old BBC design that excels at rejecting interference, particularly from traffic.
If you are living on a main road and suffering from continuous break up of your TV picture this could be your saving grace.
If you are suffering from interference or picture break up please give us a call.
