TV Aerials... and their living on the roof.

Perched on a roof they  lead a very hard life, humbly doing their job of feeding signals to your TV set.
Wind rain snow ice,all conspire against them to shorten their life
Time is the biggest enemy of an Aerial, allowing rust to thin out brackets and cables, seals
to break down on cable connection boxes allowing in water, and then corrosion eventually destroying any signal to the television,or the most common time to find out something is amiss is after an overnight gale when problems reveal themselves, by the aerial sitting on the ground.
Or worse still sticking out of the roof of your new car.
Another very common problem is water coming down the co axial cable itself, which can and will wreck the the TV,sky box or whatever the aerial cable is plugged into.
This is a cause of a lot of house fires, so it is always worth checking,by actually pulling the co ax plug out and actually checking for signs of corrosion,if not actual drips of water.

You obviously can't clamber on your roof to have a look see at just what state your aerial is in,If your television picture is suffering some problems on certain channels that come and go with the weather then  its time for a spot of maintenance.
A good way to have a look at the aerial is with a pair of binoculars.
look for excessive corrosion on the mast itself or any lose components.
If you have elderly relatives or anybody who is housebound the television is more of a companion than entertainment,so the condition of their Aerial is doubly important.Well worth while going around to check it for them, and  arrange for repairs if it looks suspect
.
Or in other words....Don't take your Television Aerial for granted.

Freeview signal problems.

The biggest problem facing a digital TV signal is that of interference.Interference can come from many sources, illegal signals straying high power amateur radio equipment.
Hair dryers are another source of stray signals, many of you might be familiar with your TV picture suddenly breaking up when your daughter switches on her hair dryer, easily solved bin it and buy another one because its not properly suppressed.
The biggest headache come's from traffic or  more precisely car ignitions systems.
These use high voltages to ignite the engines cylinders and give out very powerful radio signals that can wreak havoc with your Digital picture, making it freeze stutter or disappear altogether.
This can be down to simply a poor quality installation,or you a need a LOG periodic Aerial with very high quality CO-AX cable to reduce it to a point where it isn't objectionable
